Monday March 9

Monday, March 9th, 2009

We are working hard on the upcoming programs. We just got word we can release that we have 13 journalists from Iraq arriving at the end of the month (March). This group will be in Orlando studying Print Media in the US, which is quite an interesting topic as of late. The biggest market decline has been in Print Media over the last year and a half.

I spent a good deal of time in Alabama for school and got to see first hand the effects back in 2000 of the recession in Print Media and the convergence to on-line. My “college” family as I like to call them, lived in a small town in Alabama and “College” Dad was a paper mill engineer. He has since moved on to other things like semi-retirement, but even then they saw a huge draw on the workforce of people moving to different sectors because of the lack of work. I can only imagine what the paper sector is doing right now.

We are very hopeful for this group as they will get a chance to encouter a large number of local media contacts and have a wonderful time in Orlando. I am hoping for an event on March 30 for lunch if anyone would like to spend an hour with the real reporters from the real workplace. Please check our web-site for updates www.iccfvip.com

Working with Members

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

One of the fun parts of this organization is the diversity of it’s membership. ICCF doesn’t cater to one particular group of people or one specialized cause we work with all types of people.

I am happy to start working with our members on how to attract business from other countries and also how can local businesses get visas for their foreign counterparts to visit. I have spent most of the morning working on different functions of our office that can relate to business and also how important a role Washington DC shares in this relationship.

I will write more on that later.

I had a productive day today. I finished and sent two proposals out;  I pray that at least one would be accepted this time. They cover the same topic which is Law Enforcement. I also worked on the cover and welcome letters, as well as the name tags for the program from Serbia which will be coming in approximately two weeks. we had our first conference call in the morning; it went pretty well.

I finished my first proposal today and sent it. I think that the activities planned are pretty amazing. I will keep my fingers crossed to see if it will be accepted. I got to meet the visitors last week and got to attend a very interesting discussion. It gave an insight on politics and the confirmation that this was the field I wanna be in. I also did some research on accreditation association in Afghanistan. I was able to find only one. I looked at the list of projects to make a choice for my next proposal, but I am still undecided on the topic to choose. Overall, today was a great day.

January 22- First Group this Semester Arriving Tomorrow

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Today, the two proposals on Aviation were finished and are in the process of being sent out. I received confirmation from our State Dept. Program officer and the Merdian International coordinator that the first proposal sent out on Tuesday was received and will be considered for the visit (given the early start we got on this project, I think we have a good chance of getting it.) Another proposal to bring an Iranian group to learn about University Administration is in the finishing steps, and by the end of next week we will have sent out about 4-5 proposals total. Everyone is working hard and hopefully it will translate into some memorable visits for our international guests. Tomorrow a group is arriving on Transitional Governments (with guests from Malaysia, Ukraine, Macedonia, and Cote d’Ivoire) and we prepared their welcome books with their plans and information about the area. They will be at UCF on Monday morning, when I will hopefully have a chance to meet them or have lunch with them. The semester just started, and already this experience with ICCF has been fun, informative, and beneficial to my young (but beautifully blossoming) career in Foreign Affairs.

We are actively working on the new visitor projects for 2009. Some of the great projects include visits from countries and subjects we haven’t covered in a while. For instance, we have visitors coming in February from Serbia, on Agriculture Policy. I have been actively working to get more involved in the agriculture policy arena because of the great contacts we have in the field.

Also important today fmr Sen. Hilary Clinton was passed through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on her way to becoming the Sec. of State. I am interested to see who she picks for undersecretary positions and who will be involved in shaping Education and Exchange Policy.

The number of visitors for the coming year looks great! We are on track to host as many as last year and even more.

I have also proposed to the interns to blog about their experiences in the office so everyone gets a feel for what we are doing all day long.
